Galili, Israel
(1910-86)
   Israeli Labour and Haganah leader. He was born in the Ukraine and was taken to Palestine at the age of four. In 1924 he was among the founders of the youth wing of the Histadrut. He joined the central command of the Haganah in 1941 and from 1945 to 1947 he was one of the principal organizers of underground armed activ-ities in Palestine. In 1947 he was appointed head of Haganah's territorial command. He served as deputy minister of defence in the provisional government in 1948. From 1966 to 1970 he was minister without portfolio in the Israeli government, responsible for the information services.
